The animal services in Los Angeles provide shelter to tens of thousands of abandoned and homeless dogs every year. Despite the overwhelming number of pups taken in annually, there was one recently that stuck out from the rest.
Though rescuers initially thought New Boy was just an average dog, they quickly realized that wasn’t the case. In fact, when they examined him further, they found that they had something else on their hands…
After rescuers noticed New Boy wandering around an L.A. suburb, they quickly moved to corral him.
While they initially thought he was just another dog, they soon discovered he wasn’t.
New Boy was actually something much more unique.
He was a wolfdog — a wolf/dog hybrid!
Michelle Proulx, the director of animal care at W.O.L.F., knew that this wolfdog was timid around humans and needed a lot of attention, but she was determined.
He was starving and dehydrated, so the first thing she and her staff did was get him fluids and food.
After a trip to the Wellington Veterinary Hospital, they also found that he was anemic and suffering from inflamed feet.
“When we first met him, he was extremely timid and very scared,” Michelle said of New Boy.
Soon, though, New Boy started to calm down and be more relaxed around his rescuers.
“I think he’s starting to realize that it’s going to be okay,” Michelle said. “We’re not seeing the same intensely fearful animal that we met initially.”
She also wanted to note that most wolfdogs don’t make it past the age of 2.
That’s because their wild roots make them hard to care for, and many owners give them up.
They’re simply not your average dogs, and many people aren’t ready to take care of them.
The breed of domestic dogs most often found mixed in with a wolfdog’s genes are Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, and German Shepherds.
Their existence in the Americas goes back as far as 10,000 years.
For New Boy, the plan is to continue his recovery slowly, and eventually find him a companion.
Amazingly, he’s already well on his way!
While his old owners may not have been aware of it, New Boy is a real gem. Hopefully, he ends up with someone who realizes that!
